Meeting Places- week 2

Project Design, Logo and Technology

6 May 2010

Today we have been thinking about how a projects work can be percieved, in terms of design. Erica, who is a graphic designer, talked to the group about the history of logos and signs. There have been times in the past when alot of people could not read and write, so signs had to do alot to get their message across. A sign might have to do the job both of making a place seem attractive, as well as explaining what services were offered.

Erica showed us lots of examples of fonts. The writing which was used in the Domesday Book was quite hard to read, especially considering that people could not get glasses for their eyes if they needed them. Over time the fonts which are commonly used have become more easy to read. We wondered if the letter types of the past were deliberately made difficult for people to read.

We are excited about being able to use Bluetooth technology to transmit the content of our trail.  The final result of all our patient research will be available to download free of charge . Greg from a company called Hypertag gave us a demonstation of how to activate the Bluetooth on our mobile phones. We received the information stored in a Tag as written text, photos, a short video and a sound clip.

This means that the voices of the people that we will interview can be shared.

Hello!
I was lucky enough to meet the Meeting Places team last Thursday. It was election day, so not all of the young people could come.
We learned about the Hypertag system and how information can be sent to anyone with a Bluetooth phone.
I talked about symbols and logos, and we looked at some historical letterforms — starting with the lettering on the Bayeux Tapestry.
Then we all had a go with different drawing pens and tried writing in different styles and drew some ideas that can be developed into ideas for logotypes.
We even used a dipping pen with a big orange feather on the end and got inky fingers!
Thank you to everyone who was involved. I’ve been working up your ideas into suggestions for logotypes which you can look at and say if you have a favorite.
